Abstract: The article focuses on the efforts to protect the Yampa River in Colorado from prominent industries. The author reports that the free-flowing Yampa River is in the center of a three-way struggle between oil and gas interests, clean water for cities, and conservation advocates. The Shell Oil Company has filed for the rights to divert a significant amount of water from the Yampa which would be stored in a massive reservoir for future oil shale mining.
